Karim Mouahbi – Head of Marketing, Mad Paws

1. What do you love most about your job?

Mad Paws is building something really special. We’re creating a community of engaged Pet Sitters and Pet Owners, with the goal of making pet ownership easier for every Australian. Everyone at Mad Paws is committed to this same goal, which is why it’s such an exciting place to work.

2. Can you talk us through how you hire great people for Mad Paws?

There’s actually two parts to this question. On one hand, we have the Pet Sitters we host on our platform. On the other, we have the team members we employ in our head office.

With our Pet Sitters, it’s important for us to build a relationship from the beginning. A lot of them I know by name and I talk to regularly to obtain feedback and ensure we have the best possible people providing pet care. To do this, every person that submits an application to be a Pet Sitter has to verify their identity on our platform. Every new Pet Sitter has to complete our online training course, and we strongly suggest every Pet Sitter submit a police background check to us.

When hiring staff for the team at HQ, we ensure we have clear job descriptions that attract the right people. If we feel an applicant may be the right fit for a role, we then conduct a cultural interview. This is usually done with someone from our People and Culture team, as well as 2-3 people from other areas of the business at different experience levels. This allows us to understand whether the applicant will align with our Mad Paws “Pack Values”. Our company values are something we take very seriously. They shine through every conversation you’ll have with a Mad Paws employee and every ad campaign we run.

3. How many people do you currently employ?

We have 21 people in our Central HQ Team and around 20,000 Pet Sitters Australia-wide.

We take our jobs seriously, because we always want to ensure that Mad Paws is the best it can be. Having said that, what’s wrong with having a bit of fun while doing it? Many of the staff at Mad Paws’ HQ have been here a long time. Once they start, they don’t leave!

4. Most valuable lesson you have learned finding people for a startup?

People are everything – so you need to ensure you have the right team on board!

5. Why did you decide to include Indeed as part of you hiring strategy?

We have been using Indeed for about three years. We advertise all roles, both for our HQ Team and for our Community of Pet Sitters.

As we are a startup, we are constantly trying to test new ways to grow the business. Indeed, being a job search platform, attracts lots of people looking for Pet Sitting roles, which suits our needs perfectly. We’re trying to match Pet Sitters with Owners and you’re trying to match candidates with companies, so Indeed plays a crucial role in our business growth. It was meant to be!

6. In your experience, when do you know you need to hire new talent?

It all comes down to growth. Wherever we need to focus our efforts on growing the business is where we’ll hire. For example, we recently scaled our marketing team from 3 to 4 people full-time. We were getting a bit stretched and we realised we needed someone to manage a few more new marketing channels.

Regarding the Pet Sitters, it comes down to supply and demand. For instance, we may see areas with a demand for Sitters and a low supply. Indeed has been amazing at helping us to target those specific areas to find people.

7. In a small business, there’s no room for bad hires. What’s your most important interview question?

One of our values is related to going above and beyond. As such, in interviews we ask candidates to give an example of when they have gone above and beyond. This helps us to understand the achievements of which they’re proud.

8. What are the main benefits Mad Paws has experienced using Indeed?

Everyone at Indeed has been really fantastic and supportive in helping us to improve the performance of our job ads. They’ve also clearly communicated answers to our questions, and identified areas in which we can grow. I can’t speak of the team highly enough.

9. What advice do you have for other small business owners when hiring staff?

First and foremost, don’t rush. Hiring the wrong person in the early stages of a business or a startup can be toxic. Instead, understand whether a person is excited about the problem you are solving. After all, passion is something that can bring out the best in people. When an employee is passionate about something, they tend to go above and beyond in many ways.

10. What do you like most about the Indeed platform?

It’s very easy to test something on a small scale, such as job titles and the language we use in our job descriptions. Once you’ve validated what you’re trying to achieve, it’s easy to scale it efficiently and see the return on investment.
